How sessions workThe initial session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other a little better and for you to ask any questions you have and to ask me about my approach. It's also a chance for me to gain understanding of your problems and your view of how your challenges are affecting you. I also aim to gain more understanding of your views about yourself, others and the world around you. During the initial session I look to understand some of your history and how your problems have come about and to discuss what your goals for therapy are.
During that initial session I also take a brief history and check that the therapy I offer is appropriate for you. I will always be clear if I think a different type of support would be more better for you. Subsequent sessions start to examine your thoughts, your beliefs and your behaviours in more depth and I help you to understand how your thinking and behaviour impacts on how you feel. Then we work on recognising the unhelpful beliefs that you may hold about situations in life and changing those beliefs so that, even though the challenges in your life may not be possible to alter, your response is more helpful to you. These changes come about through learning the techniques of RECBT or CBT and putting them into practice through behavioural exercises inside and then outside the sessions. This helps you to move your new more helpful ways of thinking and behaving into your everyday life, outside the therapy room. The aim is that you can recognise and change your unhelpful patterns for yourself once therapy has finished. |
